Kano govt approves N1m support each for families of late athletes

The Kano State Government has approved a ₦1 million support package for each of the families of 22 young athletes who tragically lost their lives in a fatal accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The announcement was made on Saturday by Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo during a condolence visit to Nasarawa Hospital, Kano, where the victims’ remains were deposited. He conveyed the condolences of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, describing the incident as a “heartbreaking loss” for the entire nation.
“These young men were national heroes, returning with honor—some with gold medals. Sadly, their journey ended just kilometers from home,” Gwarzo said.
In addition to the monetary aid, the government will provide food items and relief materials to assist grieving families. The Deputy Governor also visited injured athletes receiving care at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, promising full government support for their treatment and recovery.
Gwarzo prayed for the deceased, asking Allah to grant them Jannatul Firdaus, and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting the families during this difficult period and beyond.
