NANS commends Makinde over bursary approval for students

National Association of Nigerian Students has praised the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, for approving the payment of N500,000 in bursary awards to final-year indigenes of the state studying Medicine, Maritime, and Aviation.

This commendation was contained in a statement signed by the NANS Vice President for Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs, Akinbodunse Felicia, on Sunday.

The governor has reportedly approved the payment of N500,000 each to final-year students of Oyo State origin studying Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Maritime, and Aviation in tertiary institutions across the country.

He has also approved a sum of N100,000 as bursary awards for final-year students studying other courses.

Akinbodunse, who described the governor’s action as “humane and commendable,” noted in the statement that the bursary awards would significantly boost the morale of the beneficiaries and ease the financial burden on their parents.

She said the governor’s approval came at the right time, given the challenging economic situation in the country.

The NANS leader further observed that the bursary awards, which will also be extended to final-year students in Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine, will encourage more students from the state to pursue academic careers in medicine-related fields, as well as in maritime and aviation.

Akinbodunse added that the Oyo State governor’s decision to approve the development of a cloudware platform to register all tertiary students from the state will help capture more students eligible for the bursary awards.

Describing the bursary approval as the icing on the cake for Oyo State students who have already benefited from various educational interventions under Governor Makinde’s administration, she urged him to remain committed to improving education in the state.

The NANS National Vice President also called on other state governors to emulate Governor Makinde by ensuring not only the regular payment of bursaries to their students but also increasing the amount to reflect the current economic realities in the country.
