NCDC confirms cholera crisis, initiates emergency procedures

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated a national cholera emergency center.
The national cholera emergency center was initiated due to the outbreak of cholera since the beginning of 2024.
NCDC said, there have been 53 deaths and 1,528 suspected cholera cases across 31 states, with a 3.5% fatality rate. Lagos State has reported 579 suspected cases and 29 deaths.
The Director-General of NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris, expressed concerns about worsening conditions with the rainy season. Prevention and response efforts include a National Cholera Emergency Operation Centre and coordination across various ministries and agencies.
Ogun State has also reported 25 suspected cases and one death. The government is enhancing public health measures, surveillance, and resource mobilization to combat the outbreak.
