PDP crisis deepens as Anyanwu rejects governors’ resolution

A power struggle has erupted within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary, has rejected a resolution by the PDP Governors Forum.

The forum’s resolution sought to declare the office of the National Secretary vacant and potentially replace Anyanwu.

The PDP Governors Forum, led by Governor Bala Muhammad, passed a resolution declaring the National Secretary’s office vacant.

However, Senator Anyanwu has vehemently opposed this move, arguing that it contradicts the PDP constitution and a Supreme Court judgment.

Senator Anyanwu maintained that he remains the authentic National Secretary of the party until December 2025. He emphasized that the PDP constitution vests the power to appoint or remove national officers solely in the National Convention.

The Governors Forum lacks the constitutional authority to impose its decisions on the party.

The resolution is seen as an attempt to usurp the powers of the National Working Committee (NWC), National Executive Committee (NEC), and Convention. Anyanwu condemned the resolution, warning that it could exacerbate tensions within the party and have severe consequences if not withdrawn.

He urged the Governors Forum to reverse its decision, citing its unconstitutionality and unpopularity. The development has sparked concerns about the party’s internal dynamics and its ability to meet the expectations of Nigerians.

The PDP Governors Forum’s actions have been criticized for making the party a laughing stock. Anyanwu’s camp argues that the forum’s resolution is a proxy war and a personal vendetta against him. The situation remains volatile, with the party’s future hanging in the balance.
