The Arewa Accountability Network (AAN) has vowed to stage mass protests against the continued stay of Mele Kyari as the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) after attaining the retirement age of 60.
In a statement signed by its Coordinator, Samuel Audu, and made available to journalists in Kaduna, the group said Kyari’s continued leadership of NNPCL is a direct violation of civil service regulations, which mandate retirement at 60 or after 35 years of service.
“Kyari’s refusal to step down is a blatant disregard for the principles of accountability and due process. His continued stay in office undermines the credibility of the civil service and sends the wrong message about leadership and governance in Nigeria,” the statement read.
The group also criticized Kyari’s management of fuel supply, accusing him of failing to address the persistent scarcity and high prices that have worsened economic hardship for Nigerians.
The group warned that if Kyari does not step down voluntarily, they will mobilize Nigerians for a large-scale protest to shut down the NNPCL Towers in Abuja.
“We will not sit back and watch the civil service rules be trampled upon. If he refuses to resign, we will take to the streets in protest until the right thing is done,” the statement added.
