Speculation as Wike convenes PDP stakeholders meeting without Seyi Makinde

Fresh cracks may be emerging within the camp of the former G5 Governors as Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, was noticeably absent at a high-level stakeholders meeting convened on Monday by Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, in Abuja.

The gathering, held under the banner of “Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP,” brought together several former members of the influential G5 bloc, including ex-Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia). Also in attendance were PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda, as well as serving and former legislators, zonal leaders, and key party officials.

Wike, who served as Governor of Rivers State and led the G5 rebellion against the PDP’s 2023 presidential ticket, described those present as “genuine believers” in the party’s survival. He hailed the G5’s resistance during the last general election as a stabilising force in Nigeria’s democratic process.

“Had we not taken the bold decisions we took, this country would have descended into chaos,” Wike said. “Whether you like us or not, the G5 did the right thing and we stand by that.”

The meeting’s timing and Makinde’s absence have created renewed speculation about shifting loyalties and lingering tensions within the faction, especially as the PDP continues its struggle to reposition itself ahead of future elections.

Wike used the platform to call for internal unity, warning that the party must not allow personal ambition and ego to override collective interest.

“If we must rebuild, we must return to respecting the PDP’s constitution and the rule of law. Greed and arrogance must not ruin our future,” he warned.

While no official reason was given for Governor Makinde’s absence, his non-participation has raised eyebrows, particularly as he was previously one of the most prominent voices within the G5.
