Following the 3-2 defeat to Fulham last weekend, Van Dijk hinted that negotiations had progressed: “There is progress, yes… These are internal discussions, and we’ll see.” Despite the defeat, the defender praised the club’s supporters and expressed his love for Liverpool and its fans.

It is said that Slot was instrumental in persuading Van Dijk to stay. Journalist Fabrizio Romano said the manager’s relationship with the players was absolutely crucial in securing the deal.
