Victor Osimhen’s protective face mask sparks controversy in Turkey

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen’s recent debut for Galatasaray has been overshadowed by a growing debate about his protective face mask.
The mask, which includes metal fasteners, has raised concerns about its potential risk to opposing players.
During Galatasaray’s 4-1 victory over Çaykur Rizespor, Osimhen’s mask became a point of contention after a head-on collision with Çaykur Rizespor’s Khusniddin Alikulov, who sustained a concussion.
Although initial fears of a facial fracture were unfounded, the incident has created a serious discussion about the mask’s safety.
Osimhen’s history with facial injuries is well-documented. In November 2021, he suffered a devastating injury during a clash with Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar, requiring surgery that inserted six plates and 18 screws into his face. The injury sidelined him for three months.
Following the incident, Osimhen’s club surgeon, Gianpaolo Tartaro, recommended a new, smaller protective mask for the striker in February 2022. However, the latest controversy has led some to question whether the mask poses a risk to opponents.
As the debate rages on, Osimhen’s future matches, including the highly anticipated clash with Fenerbahçe, managed by Jose Mourinho, remain uncertain.
Will the Turkish Football Federation intervene, or will Osimhen be allowed to continue wearing his protective mask?
