VIDEO: Moment guest was guided on traditional greeting etiquette during Olu of Warri’s coronation

A video captivating moment unfolded during the 3rd coronation anniversary of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, as a guest was gently corrected while attempting to shake the monarch’s hand—a gesture not in line with the traditional customs of Warri, Delta State.
The incident, which was captured on video and has since gone viral, occurred as the man moved towards the king to extend his hand to greet the revered king in a Western manner.
However, before the handshake could take place, attendants swiftly intervened, redirecting the guest and educating him on the appropriate way to greet the Olu of Warri according to the local customs.

In Warri’s rich tradition, it is customary to show respect to the monarch through specific gestures, which typically involve bowing or prostrating, rather than the Western practice of handshaking. The white man was then shown how to perform the traditional greeting, a move that was met with approval from those present at the event.
The video has sparked widespread interest online, with many praising the respectful way in which the guest was corrected and the cultural significance of upholding traditional practices during such significant occasions.
