10 things to know about Super Eagles new coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the appointment of Ivory Coast-born Eric Chelle as the new permanent head coach of the Super Eagles.
Chelle, who is set to assume his duties immediately, has been tasked with leading the team to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Here are ten important facts about the Super Eagles’ new manager:

3. Playing Experience: Chelle spent his entire professional playing career in France, featuring for clubs like Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais.
4. Coaching Journey: The 47-year-old boasts an impressive coaching résumé, having guided Mali to the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. His club management experience includes stints with GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.
5. Tactical Approach: Known for favoring an attacking, free-flowing style of play, Chelle often employs a 4-4-2 formation that prioritizes offensive football.
6. Coaching Credentials: He holds a UEFA Pro License, the highest qualification for football coaching.
7. Achievements with Mali: During his tenure as Mali’s head coach, he recorded 14 wins, five draws, and just three losses across 22 matches. His defensive prowess saw Mali secure ten clean sheets.
8. Competitive Edge: Chelle was selected for the Mali job over high-profile candidates, including former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr.
9. Philosophy: He strongly believes in the philosophy that “attack is the best form of defense,” which is expected to shape his approach with the Super Eagles.
10. Departure from Mali: Chelle’s tenure with Mali ended in June 2024 following a disappointing goalless draw against 10-man Madagascar in a World Cup qualifier.
