Hisbah arrests own staff for condemning arrest of LGBTQ members

A Kano Hisbah Board staff member Idris Ahmed Gama, was arrested after stating in an interview that police arrests of LGBTQ members violate human rights.
The Commander-General Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa announced this, emphasizing that the state government bans any group promoting LGBTQ activities.
“He clarified that Kano rejects agreements or associations contradicting Sharia and Nigerian laws against same-sex marriage.
“Gama explained he was invited to a women’s empowerment workshop where he mentioned LGBTQ in an interview without knowing its full meaning.
“He denied being part of any LGBTQ advocacy group and promised to avoid future associations with the group that invited him”.
Kano State Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, said the governor ordered a crackdown on groups promoting LGBTQ activities, asserting that such actions violate the state’s moral standards and Sharia law. The government is consulting with religious leaders to address the issue.
