Tinubu arrives back in Nigeria after AU summit in Accra

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived back in Abuja after attending the 6th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU) in Accra, Ghana.
Upon his return to Abuja, President Tinubu arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at approximately 10pm on Sunday, where he was welcomed by senior government officials.
During his visit to Ghana, President Tinubu, in his role as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, shared updates on recent developments and progress within the regional organization.
In his speech at the meeting, Tinubu highlighted some of the achievements and challenges of ECOWAS.
He showcased ECOWAS’ progress in counter-terrorism, electoral support, economic integration, humanitarian efforts, education, health, energy, mines, and agriculture.
Tinubu noted the activation of a Standby Force to counter terrorism, support for member states in enhancing electoral and governance processes, and the implementation of activities to consolidate the free trade area, customs union, and common market.
The President also highlighted ECOWAS’ humanitarian efforts, including a $9 million allocation to assist persons of concern, and support for frontline member states in the fight against terrorism.
However, President Tinubu acknowledged the bloc’s challenges, including multiple threats, geopolitical rivalries, terrorism, food insecurity, climate change, and misinformation.
Tinubu reiterated ECOWAS’ dedication to engaging in open dialogue with its member states, fostering unity, and announced plans to convene a Special Extraordinary Summit to shape the future trajectory of the regional community.
He also took the opportunity to hold a bilateral discussion with President Guelleh of Djibouti on the sidelines of the AU meeting, where they agreed to further solidify their partnership and drive forward shared priorities.
