Federal lawmaker dumps Labour Party to join APC

Imo East Senator, Ezenwa Onyewuchi, has changed his party affiliation from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

During Tuesday’s Senate session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio informed the chamber that Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi has changed his party affiliation.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, in his capacity as PGF Chairman, witnessed the reading of the letter formalizing Senator Onyewuchi’s change in party affiliation.

In his letter, Onyewuchi cited Section 68(1g) of the Nigerian Constitution for his decision.

He attributed his move to ongoing divisions and crises within the Labour Party that led to his previous election to the Senate.

“The decision is in line with Section 68(1g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. Imo State and the entire South-East remain unified under the capable leadership of Governor Hope Uzodimma,” the letter stated.

Following the announcement, Akpabio instructed the sergeant-at-arms to assign Onyewuchi a new seat among the APC majority.

Following Senator Onyewuchi’s departure, the Labour Party’s representation in the Senate has been reduced to five members.

After announcing Senator Onyewuchi’s party switch, Senate President Akpabio directed the sergeant-at-arms to reassign him a seat within the APC.
