Federal lawmaker defects from PDP to APC

Sulaiman Abubakar Gumi, the lawmaker representing Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State at the House of Representatives, has officially defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His defection was announced during Wednesday’s plenary session, where Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read Gumi’s letter of resignation from the PDP.
In his letter, Gumi cited ongoing internal disputes within the PDP in his constituency as the primary reason for his defection. He revealed that the PDP’s leadership crisis in Gummi/Bukkuyum, characterized by dual chairmanship, has disrupted the party’s structure and effectiveness in serving the community.
The lawmaker expressed frustration over the lack of party cohesion, stating that it has significantly hindered his ability to deliver on his mandate and serve his constituents effectively. He also mentioned that one of the PDP chairmen was unconstitutionally removed, while the other joined him in defecting to the APC, leaving the PDP without a solid structure in the constituency.
Following the announcement, Speaker Abbas officially welcomed Gumi to the APC, acknowledging his decision to switch parties amid the challenges faced in his constituency.
“It is noteworthy to state here that the PDP has two chairmen in my constituency, Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency. One was unconstitutionally removed while the other decamped with me, hence the party lacks structure in my constituency, and this has made it difficult for me to provide good representation and prompt delivery of dividends of democracy to my constituents,” Gumi’s letter read.
