NIS fixes dates to launch new Contactless Passport Renewal System

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is set to roll out a new Contactless Passport Application System, aimed at simplifying and streamlining the passport renewal process for Nigerians.
The NIS made this announcement via its official handle on X (formerly Twitter), detailing a phased global rollout.
The initiative, tagged as #NISContactlessPassport, will kick off with the first phase on November 1, 2024, focusing on Nigerian citizens residing in Canada. According to the schedule, the second phase will commence on November 15, 2024, covering the UK, USA, and Italy. The final phase will expand the service to Nigeria and the rest of the world from December 1, 2024.

The NIS clarified that the contactless system is exclusively applicable to passport renewals, making it easier for Nigerians abroad to update their travel documents without the usual physical processes. While details of the system’s features have not been fully disclosed, it is expected to significantly reduce waiting times and simplify the process for passport applicants.
The announcement has been met with optimism, as many Nigerians living abroad have long sought improvements in the passport renewal process. The new system promises a user-friendly experience, allowing individuals to complete applications without direct physical interactions, which aligns with global best practices.
As the November 1 launch date for Canada approaches, more information and guidelines are expected to be shared by the NIS to ensure a smooth rollout of the system.
