Fubara announces fresh LG elections in Rivers following Supreme Court ruling

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced plans to conduct fresh local government elections in compliance with a recent Supreme Court judgment that nullified the polls held on October 5, 2023.
In a state broadcast on Sunday, Fubara assured residents that his administration will act in accordance with the law and ensure a smooth transition process. He disclosed that his legal team is set to obtain the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the court’s ruling by Friday, March 7, 2025, after which the government will review and implement it accordingly.
To prevent a leadership vacuum at the local government level, the governor has directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to assume control of the 23 local councils until new elections are conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission. Outgoing chairmen have been instructed to formally hand over to the HLGAs by Monday, March 3, 2025.
Amid the political uncertainty, Fubara called for calm, urging residents to go about their daily activities without fear. He reassured them that his administration remains committed to governance, stability, and upholding the rule of law in the state.
