Reno Omokri blames Peter Obi for Super Eagles’ draw against Zimbabwe

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has created controversy after blaming Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for the Super Eagles’ underwhelming performance in their World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe.
Following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw in the crucial match on Sunday, Omokri took to social media to criticize Obi’s presence at the stadium, arguing that his attendance was a distraction to the team.
According to Omokri, politics and football should not mix, and Obi should have maintained a low profile instead of making efforts to be seen and even granting an impromptu interview at the venue.
“This match was about Nigeria, not him,” Omokri wrote. “And even if he had to go, he should have kept a low profile. Politics and football do not mix. The players needed to be focused on the game. Politicians drain morale.”
He further alleged that Obi’s presence had a negative impact, comparing it to his attendance at the AFCON final earlier this year when Nigeria lost to Ivory Coast.
Omokri’s remarks have since sent the social media abuzz, with netizens divided over whether Obi’s presence had any actual effect on the Super Eagles’ performance. While some dismissed Omokri’s claims as baseless, others echoed his sentiments, arguing that political figures should stay away from sporting events unless they hold official positions.
As discussions continue, Obi has yet to respond to Omokri’s criticism.
