A’Ibom monarch regains freedom

The paramount ruler of Mbo Local Government Area (LGA) in Akwa Ibom state, HRM Ogwong Okon A. Abang who was kidnapped on May 18 from his Ebughu Palace, has been released following a reported ransom payment of N50 million.
ASP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom Command, confirmed the monarch’s release, noting, “Yes, it’s true,” but did not provide details on whether a ransom was paid.
A community leader, speaking to Vanguard under the condition of anonymity, disclosed, “The monarch was released early this (Monday) morning and I can tell you the him. The community is bitter, especially from the realization that some youths from within were among the kidnappers. We have vowed to get to the bottom of this and bring them to book.”
The leader attributed the abduction to greed and envy among certain community stakeholders over the prestigious position held by the Paramount Ruler, wishing him a long reign.
He added that the monarch is concurrently receiving medical attention, while his wife, Obonganwan Okon Abang, who was shot during the kidnaping, is recovering well and is expected to be discharged soon.
The abduction happened around 9 pm on May 18, when armed men invade the palace, abducted the ruler, and shot his wife in the leg. This scenario has intensified concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Akwa Ibom state, particularly the Oro ethnic bloc, which is highly vulnerable due to poor road infrastructure and the porosity of its waterways.
