Breaking: EFCC summons billionaire Razaq Okoya’s sons, over naira abuse

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited Subomi and Wahab Okoya, sons of billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya, for questioning over their alleged abuse of the naira in a widely circulated video.

The video, which caused public outrage, shows the brothers spraying naira notes while a uniformed officer holds stacks of the currency—an act that violates Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which prohibits the misuse or defacing of the national currency.

Following the incident, the Nigerian Police identified and detained the officer involved. However, social media users and concerned citizens have been vocal in demanding the arrest and prosecution of the Okoya brothers for their role in the act.

In an invitation signed by Michael Wetkas, the acting director of EFCC’s Lagos directorate, the anti-graft agency directed Subomi and Wahab to appear before the head of the special operations team at 15A Awolowo Road, Lagos, by 10 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2025.

The EFCC’s action comes amid increasing scrutiny of public figures flaunting wealth in ways that undermine the integrity of the naira, a practice the commission has repeatedly condemned as part of its broader anti-corruption efforts.
