Breaking: FG bans admission of underage students
The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced on Thursday a significant policy change, banning candidates under 18 from gaining admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The Minister, announced the new policy during the ongoing 2024 policy meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
“JAMB is hereby notified that there is now a ban on underaged students, those under the age of 18, into our tertiary institutions from this 2024 admissions,” stated Mamman. He elaborated that the Federal Government is considering adopting 18 years as the minimum entry age for admission into universities and other higher learning institutions across the country.
This policy aims to standardize the age of entry into tertiary education, ensuring that students are mature enough to handle the academic and social demands of higher education. The announcement signifies a shift in the educational landscape of Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of appropriate age in the readiness of students for tertiary education.
The new policy is set to take effect with the 2024 admission cycle, impacting all prospective university and tertiary institution students.
