Breaking: Super Eagles secure 2025 AFCON spot

Nigeria’s Super Eagles clinched qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco on Thursday night, thanks to Rwanda’s surprising 1-0 loss to Libya in Kigali.
The defeat left Rwanda unable to surpass Nigeria in Group D standings, regardless of the outcome of Nigeria’s upcoming clash against Benin.
The tense match at Kigali’s Amahoro Stadium saw both sides locked in a goalless draw at halftime. However, Libya’s substitute Fahd Saad Mohamed scored the decisive goal in the 84th minute, handing Libya a late victory and sealing Nigeria’s AFCON spot.
Rwanda’s loss leaves them with just five points from five games. Even with a victory against the Super Eagles on Monday in Uyo, Rwanda cannot climb higher than third place behind Nigeria, who are three-time AFCON champions. Meanwhile, Rwanda’s loss keeps them vying for the second qualifying slot, trailing Benin by just one point.
The updated Group D standings show Libya still at the bottom with four points. Nigeria’s automatic qualification eases pressure ahead of their remaining group fixtures as they prepare to represent the nation in Morocco next year.
