Commissioner denies cholera outbreak in Nasarawa

Commissioner of Health Dr. Gaza Gwamna, stated that there are no confirmed cases of cholera outbreak in Nasarawa State.
The commissioner made this clarification during a press conference held in Akwanga Local Government Area (LGA) on Monday. “He mentioned that the state has recorded 29 suspected cases of cholera across two out of the 13 LGAs.
“Specifically, 19 suspected cases were reported in Kokona LGA, while Nasarawa-Eggon LGA recorded 10 suspected cases, including one fatality that was initially suspected to be cholera-related.
“Gwamna emphasized that the cases are still under investigation, awaiting confirmation through medical tests. He attributed the potential for cholera outbreaks during this period to heavy rains, which often contaminate water sources”.
The commissioner highlighted ongoing efforts to prevent outbreaks, including intensified sensitization campaigns in collaboration with traditional leaders and stakeholders to promote hygiene practices and regular sanitation.
Additionally, Gwamna noted that Disease Surveillance Officers have been deployed to every electoral ward across the state’s LGAs. These officers are tasked with promptly reporting suspected cases to the ministry for swift intervention.
Governor Abdullahi Sule has also approved the upgrade of four Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) to General Hospitals to enhance healthcare services in the state.
