Controversial presidential jet lands in Abuja ahead of Tinubu’s France trip

Nigeria’s newly acquired presidential jet, a luxurious Airbus A330 valued at N150 billion, allegedly arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The Airbus arrived in Abuja on Sunday, August 18, at 8:29 pm.

According to Sahara Reporters, the aircraft’s arrival precedes President Bola Tinubu’s planned departure to France today.

The acquisition of the jet has stirred controversy, with many Nigerians questioning the government’s decision to purchase such an expensive asset amid ongoing economic difficulties and high inflation.

Despite the criticism, officials argue that the aircraft is essential for national security and facilitating international diplomatic efforts.

This Airbus A330 is among three jets that were recently seized by a French court in a legal dispute involving the Ogun State Government and a Chinese company, Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited.

However, the Chinese firm released the aircraft as a goodwill gesture ahead of President Tinubu’s meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Last month, the aircraft was spotted in France as it underwent final preparations for delivery, with its tail registration now bearing the seal of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The plane was originally owned by a German bank, which repossessed it from an Arab prince and businessman who defaulted on a multi-million-dollar loan before it was acquired by Nigeria.

The Airbus A330 is equipped with high-end amenities, including a bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, an office, a conference and dining room, as well as first-class and economy-style seating.

President Tinubu is set to use the new jet for his trip to France today, marking its inaugural flight under his administration. He is expected to return to Nigeria after a brief working visit.
