Drug abuse: NGO calls for urgent action to protect youths, children

A non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Dr Yusuf John-Suberu Foundation on Wednesday stressed the urgent need to address the growing problem of drug abuse among young people in the country.
The Executive Director of the Foundation , Dr Yusuf Suberu made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Suberu, who cited the devastating effects of drug abuse on young individuals and the nation at large, expressed concern over the increasing rate of drug abuse among youths.
He described it as a major threat to their health, well-being, and future.
Suberu, however, acknowledged that completely eliminating drug abuse might be a daunting task, while believing that it was possible to significantly reduced its prevalence to negligible levels.
“Regrettably, many young people now view drugs and cultism as acceptable, leading to the loss of promising individuals to these destructive habits.
“The situation is alarming and requires immediate attention from all stakeholders, including government, parents, and civil society organisations and NGOs.
“Our goal is to shift the narrative and deter a significant number of youths from embracing these harmful behaviours,”he said.
Suberu, however, suggested a comprehensive solution to tackle the issue, involving education, counseling, and rehabilitation initiatives to help affected youths overcome drug abuse and rebuild their lives.
The NGO boss also called on the government to intensify its efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse by strengthening legislation and enforcement, as well as providing assistance to families and communities ravaged by drug abuse.
“The future of our nation is at stake, and we must act now to protect our young people from the scourge of drug abuse.
“On our part, we will be launching a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and to mobilise support for affected youths.
