FCTA revokes certificates of occupancy in Maitama II

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has withdrawn Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) for multiple plot owners in Maitama II, Cadastral Zone A10, Abuja, citing non-payment of outstanding bills.
The revocation takes effect from January 15, 2025, following the expiration of a grace period granted by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The decision is anchored on Section 28 of the Land Use Act of 1978, which authorizes the government to revoke land rights when terms of allocation are violated. The FCTA clarified that individuals who cleared their payments before the deadline remain unaffected.
A published list of 568 defaulters includes prominent figures such as Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen, Governors Duoye Diri (Bayelsa) and Hope Uzodinma (Imo), and Labour Minister Nkiruka Onyejeocha. Others named are former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, PDP National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, and Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro.
The announcement also highlights well-known politicians like Shehu Sani, Ben Ayade, John Owan Eno, and Ango Abdulahi, alongside a slew of senators, former ministers, and public figures.
The FCTA emphasized that this move reinforces its commitment to enforcing compliance with land allocation terms and ensuring responsible land management within the capital territory. The Maitama II district, known for its prime real estate value, could now present fresh opportunities for developers and residents as reclaimed properties become available.
In a stern warning, the FCTA advised the public against engaging in transactions involving the revoked plots. It urged landowners to fulfill their obligations promptly to avoid future revocations, stressing that accountability remains paramount in land resource administration.
