FG suspends 13 students over bullying incident

The Federal Government has taken swift action against bullying at Federal Government College (FGC) Enugu, suspending 13 students involved in a recent incident that raised serious concerns about safety and discipline in the school.
This decision was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, through a statement issued on Wednesday.
The Minister expressed deep concerns over the reported bullying incident, emphasizing the urgent need for a safe and supportive learning environment. In the statement, titled “FG Suspends Students for Bullying,” he condemned the act, describing it as a serious breach of the standards expected within federal institutions.
To ensure a thorough investigation, the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) has been directed to work closely with security agencies. Dr. Alausa noted that the investigation would also explore any possible connections between the students involved and external groups that may have influenced their behavior.
In response to the incident, immediate steps have been taken to strengthen security on campus. The Ministry of Education has mobilized law enforcement and is currently reviewing safety protocols at FGC Enugu to prevent similar incidents.
The suspended students will face a six-week suspension, pending the outcome of the investigative report, the Minister stated. He added that this decisive action is intended to send a strong message to all students about the federal government’s zero-tolerance policy on bullying.
The incident came to light after a viral video, showing a gang assault on an SS1 student, was widely shared on social media on November 7, 2024, sparking public outrage and calls for accountability.
