Gombe Assembly makes history, passes Disability Bill

In a landmark move, the Gombe State House of Assembly has completed the first and second reading of the Gombe State Disability Bill, paving the way for the establishment of a Disability Commission and protection of rights for persons with disabilities.
The Advocacy for Disability Act Cluster (ADAC), a consortium of five civil society organizations, has applauded the assembly for prioritizing the bill, ‘which resonates with the commitment of the state government to empower persons with disabilities’.
The bill, sponsored by Honourable Shuaibu Adamu and co-sponsored by three other members, aims to provide a legal framework for the protection and promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities in Gombe State.
ADAC in a press release issued to our correspondent on Saturday commended the assembly for demonstrating democratic values and responsiveness to the community of persons with disabilities, making them a pacesetter for other assemblies.
The cluster urged the House Committee on Women Affairs and Special Duties to expedite the review process within the mandated six weeks, expressing optimism that Gombe State will soon join the league of inclusive states in Nigeria.
“This milestone is a testament to the power of advocacy and collaboration, and a victory for the over 594,015 persons with disabilities in Gombe State.”, the press release reads in parts.
