Govt declares transporting wet sand Illegal on Roads

The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning against the transportation of wet sand in tipper trucks across the state, describing the act as illegal.
This directive was announced on Monday by the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, in a statement shared via the ministry’s social media platforms.

Alebiosu stressed that compliance with road safety and infrastructure laws is non-negotiable, especially in matters concerning the transportation of dredged materials. He explained that driving tipper trucks loaded with wet sand poses significant risks to road infrastructure and compromises public safety.
“Driving tipper trucks filled with wet sand on the road is highly illegal,” Alebiosu stated, urging operators to ensure sand is adequately dried before transporting it.
The ministry elaborated on the adverse effects of transporting wet sand, noting that its weight significantly increases the strain on roads.
“Wet sand significantly increases the weight of the truck, doubling its negative impact on the road. The excessive weight accelerates wear and tear, leading to cracks, potholes, and other structural damages on roads not designed for such stress,” the statement read.
Tipper operators were advised to adhere to regulations by allowing dredged sand to dry fully and ensuring loads do not exceed legal weight limits. The commissioner further warned that violators would face strict enforcement actions to safeguard Lagos’s road infrastructure.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining road standards and fostering safer transportation practices across the state.
