The Association of Papal Knights and Medalists in Nigeria (APKMN) has thrown its weight behind the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), led by Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, Archbishop of Owerri, in condemning the relentless killings attributed to armed herdsmen in parts of Benue State.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the APKMN aligned with the CBCN in denouncing the persistent attacks in Gwer West, Agatu, Logo, and Guma Local Government Areas, describing them as devastating and a source of immense suffering and displacement.

Jointly signed by National President, Comdr. Steve Adehi (SAN), and National Secretary-General, Hon. (Arc.) Rosemary Azumi, the statement acknowledged the development strides made by the Benue State Government under Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia.

According to the association, these include improved infrastructure, prompt salary payments, upgrades to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, reconstitution of tertiary institution governing councils, and the establishment of a new University of Agriculture, Science, and Technology, alongside improved rural road networks.

However, APKMN expressed concern over insecurity, urging greater federal intervention.

“We echo the CBCN’s concern regarding the security situation in the state. Government should stop playing politics with security matters and must prioritize addressing the root causes of insecurity, ensuring the safety of citizens, and protecting lives and property. It is the primary responsibility of the Federal Government to secure the lives and property of its citizens and we call on Government to live up to its responsibility and campaign promises in that regard. The plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and the impact on the state’s economy, particularly its agricultural sector, demand urgent attention.

“We sympathize with the affected communities and call on Government to intensify efforts to restore peace, security, and stability in Benue State,” the statement read.

The association also extended its sympathy to victims of recent flooding in Mokwa, Niger State, urging the government to implement proactive measures to curb recurring flood disasters.

“The Association commends Government in the gains made towards economic recovery but notes that while Government statistics show slight gains in efforts toward economic recovery, these gains are not felt by the increasing number of impoverished Nigerians. We therefore urge Government to put in more effort in ensuring that these economic gains impact positively the lives of its citizens.

“As we approach the celebration of another democracy day, we pray that Government will intensify efforts to strengthen our democratic structures, provide good governance and ensure that our teeming masses enjoy the dividends of democracy,” the statement added.
