Labour Party warns Peter Obi against blackmailing party’s leadership

The Labour Party has issued a statement warning its presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, to stop blackmailing the party’s leadership, particularly National Chairman Julius Abure.

The party attributed the crisis within the Labour Party to Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who is serving a suspension for anti-party activities.

“The problem with the Labour Party was not created by the ruling party (APC), rather the problem in the Labour Party was created and sustained by Peter Obi and Dr. Alex Otti,” the statement read.

The Labour Party leadership questioned Obi’s claims that the APC-led federal government has infiltrated the Labour Party’s leadership, stating that no evidence supports this assertion.

“We dare Obi to produce any tangible or intangible evidence which suggests remotely or otherwise that the Abure leadership of the Labour Party is on the bed with the APC-led government,” the statement challenged.

The party maintained that they supported Obi during the 2023 election and subsequent tribunal proceedings, and that Obi’s current actions are driven by his failure to provide leadership for the party.

“Nobody is infallible and it behoves on anyone who makes mistakes to be bold enough to own it,” the statement added. “Obi failed in providing leadership for the party. He should own up to his mistakes.” The party urged Obi to introspect and stop making “unguided statements” that could harm the party’s reputation.

The statement concluded by affirming that Barrister Julius Abure’s leadership is legitimate and “has come to stay.” “We are therefore calling on Peter Obi and other aggrieved members of the party to understand and digest the fact that Barrister Julius Abure leadership has come to stay and nothing can change that,” the party emphasized.
