Lawmakers raise alarm over spread of cooking gas stations

The Imo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Hope Uzodimma to take decisive action to mitigate the risks posed by the uncontrolled growth of cooking gas stations and retail outlets in residential areas in order to ensure the safety and well-being of Imo citizens.
Hon. Sam Ikechukwu Osuji, who represents Isiala Mbano in the State Constituency, tabled the motion, warning that the situation was a “ticking time bomb” ready to ignite.
He reported that explosions have already occurred in certain areas, leading to casualties and property destruction.
“We cannot fold our arms and watch our people die. We must act now to prevent further disasters,” Osuji said.
The motion was supported by several lawmakers, who commended Osuji for his “people-oriented” motion.
They expressed concern over the indiscriminate location of cooking gas stations and retail outlets in residential areas, without consideration for the safety of lives and properties.
Therefore, the House, resolved that the governor should direct the Ministry of Petroleum, Ministry of Environment, and Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) to investigate and seal dangerous cooking gas stations and retail outlets
The House Committee on Environment and ISOPADEC, Oil and Gas were additionally mandated to summon officials from the relevant ministries to account for the unchecked growth of these outlets.
The Clerk was instructed to forward the resolution to the governor for his attention.
