Man who rejected China scholarship over relationship, breaks up 3 months later

A young man has sparked a wave of reactions on social media after sharing how he forfeited a life-changing scholarship to study engineering in China due to his girlfriend’s ultimatum, only for the relationship to end shortly afterward.
The story, which trended on X (formerly Twitter), highlighted the tough choice the man made, driven by love. In his post, he explained that his girlfriend had threatened to break up with him if he pursued the international opportunity. He chose to stay back and enrolled at Vaal University of Technology (VUT) instead, a decision he would soon regret.
“I rejected a scholarship to study engineering in China because my girlfriend at the time told me she’d break up with me because of the distance. So, I chose VUT instead. We broke up three months after rejecting the offer,” he wrote.
