A video of a Nigerian church event where members danced to Davido and Omah Lay’s hit song “With You” has gone viral, creating debate on social media.

The clip, which surfaced online, shows a group of church members, including children, performing a choreographed dance to the recently released secular track right inside the church premises.

The performance appeared to be part of a church program, possibly a youth or children’s event, judging by the participants and the light-hearted nature of the activity.

However, the scene has triggered a wave of mixed reactions from netizens, with many divided over the appropriateness of playing a secular song especially one by mainstream pop artistes in a place of worship.

The video was captioned:

“Moment Davido/Omah Lay’s hit song, ‘With You’ was played for choreography inside a church.”

While some critics slammed the church for allowing what they called “worldly music” in a spiritual setting, others defended the act, suggesting it was simply a harmless celebration and an expression of joy.

On the flip side, some users felt the outrage was exaggerated.

Read some netizens’ reactions below;

@tobicods: This is embarrassing !!!

@civilian: Sometimes I just wonder if jesus died for us or he died for nothing, everything is pure wrong with this

@victoria: And there are beautiful gospel songs they can use for choreography…. but then‍♀️

@olusegun: Comment session be funny as expected.
The funnier thing is, there is no single thing happening here that doesn’t steady happen in other religions and denominations; their choir even drop secular songs, slangs and twerk in church, but when a white garment does it… wahala.

@oluwa_samuel: Just to clarify, the funfair was a joyful event for children in celebration of their upcoming harvest anniversary on Sunday. It’s unfortunate that dancing a Davido song inside the church, leading to misunderstandings. Let’s focus on the positive impact for the kids.

The video continues to trend as more Nigerians share their views on the ever-blurring line between pop culture and spirituality in contemporary church settings.
