Natasha’s suspension in order, coalition backs senate

The Network of Civil Society Organizations in Nigeria has commended the Nigerian Senate for its decisive action in suspending Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan over alleged misconduct, emphasizing the need to maintain decorum within the legislative chamber.
In a statement issued by the coalition’s National Coordinator, Comrade Victor Kalu, the group—which comprises 65 independent civil society and non-governmental organizations—affirmed its support for the Senate’s resolution, describing it as a move to protect the integrity of the institution.
The controversy stems from allegations of sexual harassment leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Akpoti Uduaghan. The coalition argued that the claims lacked merit, noting that the Senate President has consistently upheld fairness in the chamber’s proceedings.
The group recalled its earlier press briefing on March 3, 2025, where it cautioned Akpoti Uduaghan against what it termed an unnecessary escalation of a routine seat reassignment. It pointed out that similar changes had occurred in the past without incident, urging lawmakers to uphold the principles of the Senate.
The coalition further highlighted the bipartisan nature of the Senate’s decision, noting that members across party lines, including those from Akpoti Uduaghan’s home state, backed her suspension. It emphasized that any claims of sexual harassment should not be used to bring the Senate into disrepute.
While commending the Senate’s firm stance, the group urged Akpoti Uduaghan to explore internal resolution mechanisms to regain her seat, stressing the importance of continued representation for her constituency.
“We must not allow personal or group interests to override national priorities,” the statement read, adding that the Senate’s actions align with the broader goals of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The coalition concluded by calling on Nigerians to support the Senate and other arms of government in fostering national stability and development.
