NGO moves to enhance freedom of Assembly in Nigeria

A non governmental organisation known as ‘Open Knowledge Development Initiative’ (OKDI) recently hosted a workshop in Gombe State on “Advocacy and Empowerment for Civic Space in Nigeria”.

The workshop brought together a diverse group of civil society leaders and community leaders to strengthen advocacy efforts in the country.

Founder of the organisation, Adamu Usman Garko during the opening ceremony of the event explained that the workshop would focus on legal mechanisms for advocacy within the framework of freedom of assembly and association (FoAA) in Nigeria, with sessions led by distinguished members of the Nigerian Bar Association.

He added that the participants would gain valuable insights into the legal landscape governing FoAA rights and refined their communication strategies through a segment led by Dr. Yunana Ahmed, Project Manager of the United States Government Alumni Gombe.

“The workshop empowers civil society and community leaders with the tools needed to navigate legal and communicative aspects of advocacy, strengthening Nigeria’s civic space.”, he stated.

Our correspondent reports that notable special guests at the event, included; Muhammad Ismail Hinna, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice in Gombe, and Justice Abdullahi Doma.
