Northern group accuses Babachir Lawal of hypocrisy in statement against Tinubu

Prominent Northerners Distance Themselves from Babachir Lawal’s Criticism of Tinubu Administration
Some prominent Nigerians from the North have distanced themselves from recent remarks made by Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Babachir Lawal recently claimed that Nigeria collapsed after President Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, 2023. He attributed the economic downturn to Tinubu’s announcement of fuel subsidy removal on the day of his inauguration, arguing that the policy was implemented prematurely without a fully assembled cabinet.
In response, the Northern Congress for Change (NCC) stated that Lawal does not represent the interests of the North and labeled his comments as unfounded and spurious. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the group’s convener, Dr. Ben Amodu, argued that Lawal’s criticism stems from his failed support for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the last election.
The group condemned Lawal, highlighting his alleged misappropriation of public funds while in office. “David Babachir Lawal’s statements are not only misguided but also hypocritical. Still reeling from the grass-cutting scandal and his failed support for Peter Obi, he lacks the moral authority and temerity to criticize President Tinubu’s administration,” Amodu said.
Amodu further emphasized that Lawal’s involvement in the grass-cutting scandal and his subsequent removal from office due to financial impropriety have significantly tarnished his reputation. He urged Nigerians to focus on the tangible progress being made under President Tinubu’s leadership and to disregard Lawal’s assertions.
The Northern Congress for Change called on Nigerians to concentrate on the significant strides being made under Tinubu’s administration and to ignore the disruptive criticisms from figures like Lawal.
