Rainstorm displaces 1,000 in Kogi community

Over 1,000 residents of Iyara, the headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, have been rendered homeless following a heavy rainstorm in the community.
It was gathered that the incident happened on Monday night.
Shortly after the helpless disaster, Oba Jacob Meduten, the Eleta Oluyara of Iyara, called on the government, well-to-do individuals, and corporate bodies to assist the victims to ameliorate their sufferings.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government has appealed to the people of the state to take precautions as the rainy season is fast approaching.
The Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency, Mouktar Atimah, while confirming the incident in Iyara, said, “We received information that a natural disaster happened in Iyara, and immediately the office deployed personnel for an on-the-spot assessment. The local government chairman also contacted us, and we are partnering together to see how to reduce the suffering of the affected victims.
“Everybody living in low-lying areas should move to higher ground. Kogites should be very careful about the way they roof their houses because if your houses are not properly roofed, the breeze can easily access the building.
“Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has set machinery in motion to send relief materials to the affected community to alleviate their sufferings.”He added.
