Transfer: Newcastle’s Almirón joins Atlanta United

Miguel Almirón has sealed a permanent transfer to Atlanta United for an undisclosed fee, marking a return to the club he originally left six years ago for Newcastle United.
Fondly known as ‘Miggy’, Almirón joined the Magpies in January 2019 for a then-club-record fee and went on to make 223 appearances, scoring 30 goals during his six-year stint on Tyneside, club statement disclosed this.
A fan favourite, the 30-years-old Paraguayan international played a pivotal role in Newcastle’s resurgence, helping the club reach the Carabao Cup final and secure a top-four Premier League finish in the 2022/23 season.
He also etched his name in club history by opening the scoring in Newcastle’s first UEFA Champions League home game in over two decades, netting in a 4-1 thrashing of Paris Saint-Germain in October 2023.
Reflecting on Almirón’s departure, Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe said: “On behalf of the club, I want to thank Miggy for everything he has given us during our time together.
“He has been the ultimate professional, and he has been a big part of some of our most memorable moments in recent seasons.
“He is a great person and we’ll miss him greatly, but this is the right move at the right time for him and his family, and we wish them well.”
As he embarks on this new chapter back in Major League Soccer, Almirón leaves behind a lasting legacy at St. James’ Park—one of passion, perseverance, and unforgettable moments.
