VIDEO: FG cracks down on fake degree certificates

In a significant move, the Federal Government has declared degree certificates from Cotonou University, issued between 2017 and present, invalid.
Additionally, employees in both public and private sectors holding counterfeit certificates from Benin and Togo will face immediate termination.
Education Minister Tahir Mamman announced these measures during a press conference marking his first anniversary in office.
The decisions were approved by the Federal Executive Council, presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
A committee established by the Ministry of Education investigated the issuance of fake certificates, leading to the federal government’s decisive action. The measures aim to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s education system and ensure fairness for genuine graduates.
The federal government’s stance is clear: degree certificates from unrecognised institutions in Benin and Togo will not be accepted. This move will impact individuals who obtained certificates without attending recognized universities in these countries.
To enforce this decision, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will issue a circular to all employers, public and private, to verify the authenticity of their employees’ certificates. The Head of Service has also been mandated to identify and terminate public servants holding fake certificates.

This crackdown signals a commitment to academic integrity and accountability, ensuring that only genuine qualifications are recognized in Nigeria. The federal government’s actions will help maintain the value of authentic degrees and protect the interests of deserving graduates.
