VIO honourary mayor seeks public participation in road safety

Dr Yusuf Suberu, the Squadron Leader, Vehicle Inspection Office(VIO) Mayors of the Federation has called for public participation in improving traffic safety in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Suberu made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said that a combination of enforcement, education, and engineering was necessary to reduce road crashes in FCT.
He noted that there was also need for collaborative effort between stakeholders.
Suberu also stressed the importance of data analysis to identify crash hotspots and develop targeted interventions.
“Enforcement of traffic laws, regular vehicle inspections and public awareness campaigns are crucial.
“Although, enforcement alone cannot solve the problem of road crashes.
“We also need to educate drivers and pedestrians on traffic rules and safety measures.
“The FCT can achieve significant reduction in road crashes by implementing these measures,”he said.
Suberu emphasised the need for improved road infrastructure, including road markings, signage, lighting among others.
He however, announced plans to collaborate with other road safety agencies to establish a unified traffic management system.
“We have increased inspections leading to a significant reduction in road crashes involving commercial vehicles.
“But we are not resting on oars as we will do more to ensure that FCT was free of RTCs.
“The FCT deserves a world-class traffic management system. We will work towards achieving this goal,” Suberu said.
The VIO boss commended the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike for efforts at curbing Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) in the territory.
He appealed to drivers and motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations and ensure sanity on the highways.
