Eleven inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kuje, have successfully undergone hernia surgeries.

The medical procedures, carried out by a dedicated in-house team of healthcare professionals, mark a milestone under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Describing the achievement as “a major leap forward,” the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Umar Abubakar AICMC, ANIPR, stated:

“This is more than a medical intervention; it’s a reflection of the new direction in correctional service management, where the wellbeing and dignity of inmates are treated as priorities.”

The initiative, which is part of the broader health sector reforms in custodial centres nationwide, is being driven by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, whose commitment has brought life to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Our Minister has shown that every Nigerian life matters—whether inside or outside the walls of correctional facilities,” Abubakar noted.

“His leadership has given meaning to the President’s vision for an inclusive, just, and compassionate society.”

The successful surgeries at Kuje are not isolated. Across the country, custodial centres are witnessing upgrades in hospital units and medical services. The Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Janguza, Kano State, among others, has also benefited from expanded medical care.

The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche MFR, mni, praised the development, saying:

“This is the beginning of a transformative era in correctional administration—one that places rehabilitation and humane treatment at its core. We are grateful for the Honourable Minister’s proactive and humanitarian approach.”

Nwakuche reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to aligning with the national agenda:

“We will continue to ensure that no inmate is left behind in our pursuit of comprehensive healthcare and effective rehabilitation.”
