Rivers declares 2 days public holidays

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has declared Thursday, October 3, and Friday, October 4, 2024, as public holidays in preparation for the upcoming local government elections scheduled for Saturday, October 5.
In a statewide broadcast on Wednesday, Governor Fubara also announced a total restriction on vehicular and human movement in and out of the state, as well as within local government areas, from midnight on Friday, October 4, until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5.
The Governor explained that the measures were taken to ensure that registered voters could travel to their respective communities and participate in the elections peacefully. “We are leaving no stone unturned to enable all registered voters to travel to their communities to participate and peacefully exercise their civic responsibility at their polling units,” Fubara stated.
He further directed law enforcement agencies to arrest and prosecute anyone who attempts to violate the movement restrictions during this period. The restrictions are part of broader efforts to ensure a smooth and orderly election process across the state.
The Rivers local government elections are set to take place amid tight security, with authorities focused on ensuring peace and fairness at the polls.
