Fintiri revokes Atiku, Boni Haruna, others’ traditional titles

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has revoked all traditional titles previously held by prominent figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governor Boni Haruna, and himself, following the creation of new emirates and chiefdoms in the state.
According to report, this decision affects traditional titles tied to the old emirates, rendering them null and void. Atiku, originally from Jada, held the prestigious title of Waziri Adamawa, while Boni Haruna, from Michika, was the Makaman Mubi. Governor Fintiri, a native of Madagali, had the title of Sarki Yaki Mubi.
Speaking at the coronation ceremony of the newly installed Chief of Madagali, Fintiri emphasized that all District Heads must now swear allegiance to the newly established emirates and chiefdoms.
“Henceforth, traditional titles acquired from the old emirates and chiefdoms are hereby dropped. The constituted traditional councils of the new emirates and chiefdoms are therefore directed to recommend new titles for approval in line with the statutory dictates of tradition,” the governor declared.
Under this new arrangement, the Lamido of Adamawa must officially nominate Atiku and other affected individuals if they are to regain their traditional titles—pending approval from the state government.
This sweeping change marks a significant restructuring of Adamawa’s traditional leadership, altering long-standing affiliations and historical ties.
