Fulham condemns online abuse aimed at Bassey after Man Utd win

Fulham and Nigeria national team have condemned the racist and homophobic abuse aimed at Calvin Bassey after Sunday’s FA Cup win over Manchester United.

The Nigerian defender was subjected to racial and homophobic abuse online after Sunday’s FA Cup win over Manchester United. Bassey had opened the scoring at Old Trafford before Bruno Fernandes’ leveller sent the two teams into a dramatic penalty shootout, won by the visitors by 3-4. But the vile insults he received were condemned by Fulham the day after.

The club¡s statement reads: “Fulham Football Club is utterly appalled at the racist and homophobic abuse received and subsequently shared by Calvin Bassey on social media after yesterday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United. We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.

“We will do everything in our power to work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators of these vile messages and taking the strongest form of action against them. Fulham Football Club is committed to maintaining a firm stance against all forms of discrimination and remains dedicated to fostering an environment of respect and inclusion.”

The Nigeria national team also showed their support for their player, following Fulham’s statement by releasing their own one. “The NFF stands firmly against all forms of discrimination, including racial abuse, and fully supports Calvin Bassey in the face of these unacceptable actions.

We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all players, both on and off the field. Calvin has our unwavering support, and together, we will continue to fight against racism in football and society,” the Super Eagles wrote on social media.
