ICC seeks arrest warrants for Netanyahu, Hamas leaders

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has announced that it is seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh, and Mohammed al-Masri. Additionally, ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan is also seeking a warrant for Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.
Khan stated that he has “reasonable grounds to believe” that these individuals bear responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The alleged crimes committed by Hamas leaders date back to at least October 7, 2023, while those allegedly committed by Israeli leaders date back to at least October 8, 2023.
Israeli politicians have strongly condemned the decision to apply for an arrest warrant for Netanyahu, with War Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz calling it a “deep distortion of justice”. A senior Hamas official also criticized the move, stating that it “equates the victim with the executioner.”
The ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber will now review the evidence and decide whether to approve the arrest warrants. If approved, the warrants will be issued, and ICC member states will be obligated to arrest and surrender the individuals to the court if they enter their territory.
