Scrap regional commissions, Gombe cleric advises FG

An islamic scholar in Gombe State Dr Auwal Abdullahi has advised the federal government to scrap regional commissions asserting that they are not the solution to security problems.

He made the assertion in an interview with journalists yesterday in Gombe.

The cleric opined that the two regional commissions in the country established by the federal government namely; Niger-Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the North-east Development Commission (NEDC) have boards ‘which are allocated huge amounts of money’ to run the commissions saying such allocations attract agitations from other regions to have similar parastatals.

Buttressing his points, he pointed out that currently, there is a clamour for establishment of South-east Development Commission “that has now passed second reading at the national assembly”.

According to him, if it scales through, other geo-political zones such as North-west, North-central and South-west will crave for similar commissions which he said would add more burden on the federal government.

Auwal who also holds the traditional title of ‘Gafakan Akko’ advised the federal government to scrap the commissions asserting that they do not solve security problems in the country but add financial expenses on the government and duplicates the functions of other humanitarian agencies.
