Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa marked his swearing-in on Monday with a major act of clemency, granting freedom and reduced sentences to 43 prisoners in the state.

Acting on recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, Aiyedatiwa ordered the immediate release of eight inmates. He also commuted the death sentences of 15 convicts to prison terms and reduced the life sentences of 20 others.

The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, confirmed the development in a statement titled “Inauguration: Gov Aiyedatiwa Extends Mercy to 43 Prisoners.” The decision, according to Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, underscores Aiyedatiwa’s belief in rehabilitation and the role of mercy in the justice system.

“This move reflects Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to second chances and a more humane justice system,” Ajulo stated.

The governor’s focus on judicial reform has been evident since October 2024, when he appointed six new judges to strengthen the state’s legal system, marking a historic milestone in his administration.

Speaking on his leadership journey, Aiyedatiwa paid tribute to his late predecessor, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, revealing that it was Akeredolu’s wish for him to succeed him. “He said it on our first day of inauguration,” Aiyedatiwa recalled.

With his new term now in full swing, the governor has set a strong tone for justice, fairness, and rehabilitation as key priorities of his administration.
