Atiku advocates for protection of traditional rulers

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has called for the safeguarding of traditional institutions from the excesses and overreach of state governments.
He emphasized the importance of preserving the integrity and autonomy of these institutions, which have historically played a crucial role in maintaining cultural heritage, local governance, and social stability.
Atiku made these remarks during a recent public event, where he highlighted the increasing instances of state governments encroaching on the powers and functions of traditional leaders.
He argued that such actions undermine the authority of traditional rulers and disrupt the social fabric of communities.
“Traditional institutions are the custodians of our cultural heritage and have been instrumental in maintaining peace and order at the grassroots level. It is imperative that we protect them from the overbearing influence of state governments,” Atiku stated.
He pointed out that traditional rulers have a unique and irreplaceable role in Nigerian society, often serving as mediators, conflict resolvers, and agents of development in their respective domains. Therefore, any attempt to diminish their authority or interfere with their functions could have far-reaching negative consequences for local governance and community cohesion.
Atiku called on the federal government to enact policies and legislation that would clearly delineate the powers and responsibilities of traditional institutions, ensuring that they are not subjected to undue interference by state authorities. He also urged traditional leaders to stand united and resist any attempts to erode their autonomy.
Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to championing the cause of traditional institutions and pledged to continue advocating for their protection and empowerment. “Our traditional institutions must be respected and preserved for future generations. They are an integral part of our identity and governance structure,” he added.
