Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has declared curfew in Minna, Niger State

The Governor unveiled a series of hardline security policies aimed at curbing rising insecurity, thuggery, and drug-related activities in the state.

He made these pronouncements during a recent press briefing, where he stressed the government’s determination to restore peace and order, even if it means making drastic changes.

One of the key decisions announced was the imposition of a strict curfew on Okada riders and Keke-Napep operators. Effective immediately, these operators are restricted from operating between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM. The only exception to this rule will be for individuals with verifiable medical emergencies.

Governor Bago emphasized that the move is intended to limit the movement of criminal elements who often use these means of transport to perpetrate crimes under the cover of darkness.

In his statement, the governor did not mince words about the government’s readiness to relocate residents contributing to instability in the state. “If it will cause us to relocate people from wherever they are living right now and causing harm and unrest, the government will do that,” he said, signaling a potential crackdown on communities or areas identified as safe havens for criminals.

Furthermore, Governor Bago issued a stern warning to landlords and property owners. He declared that any house found to be harboring drug dealers would be demolished. According to him, the state government would not tolerate any support system that enables drug abuse and trafficking.

Bago concluded by reaffirming that thugs would henceforth be treated as armed robbers, with all the legal consequences that classification entails.

The state government is expected to release further details in the coming days regarding implementation and enforcement strategies.
