Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, has unveiled plans to establish an inclusive interim government, following the exit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Following consultations with all major political parties, a consensus has been reached to form a transitional government.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman will now hold talks with President Mohammed Shahabuddin to finalize the arrangements and bring a resolution to the current political situation.
Dhaka Tribune quoted him as saying: “After holding a fruitful discussion with all political parties, we have decided to form an interim government. We will speak with President Mohammed Shahabuddin now to resolve the situation.”
He called for a halt to all violence and promised that the new government will ensure justice for all the deaths that took place during the Anti-Discriminatory Student Movement.
Professor Asif Nazrul of Dhaka University’s Law Department has been requested to issue a statement urging students to end their protest.
Meanwhile, General Waker-Uz-Zaman revealed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has left the country after tendering her resignation.
He also stated that no representatives from the Awami League were present at the meeting with political parties held at the army headquarters.
